QRM
DALL'ITALIA
Alan - 3C5I ci scrive:
Come potremmo giudicare coloro che fanno QRM a
ripetizione ????
versione originale in inglese.
Tutti sbagliamo, puo' accadere, e bene pero' rendersi conto
rara.
Non e' corretto, invece, chiamare troppo a lungo in risposta
In quel momento i
contatti con i paesi del bacino mediterraneo (Italia
compresa) sarranno poco appetibili per questi CTR
africani.
all'Europa Meridionale ove, i contatti, sono fattibili piu'
eventualmente in ascolto.

QRM FROM
ITALY
Alan, 3C5I
has sent to me, and also to the UKSMG comittee,
the message reported below.
Unfortunately it is a sad comment. We can only point out the
poor "ham spirit" of that ham.
I've asked to Alan to tell me the call sign of the
responsible of such bad behaviour....If he informs me i'll
publish it.
All of us can make mistakes, it's possible, but everyone
must think about the behaviour to keep during radio
operations.
For example, during a pile up it is normal that everybody
call together and it is obvious that is not possible to set
up a list.
It is not "fair" at all to make a long call answering to a
qrz or to break in repeatedly during an estabilished
qso.
It is true that someone may not receive the correspondant of
the DX station, but it is also true that at least the DX
station must be heard!
With such kind of behaviours a station may not be able to
listen for the dx and you can create confusion and a slow
down in the dx operations.
In the first case a local station may not be able to make
the dx qso even if the dx op has given ok to him.
In the second one the dx op may not be able to listen for
the correspondants anywhere are they located.
Some suggestions for the incoming future.
The better TEP and F2 propagation will allow, in the next
months, dx between AF and nothern EU countries. So the
southern EU stations will become less rare for such AF dx
people.
I think that for us here in southern EU, it is a good idea
to let a certain station from South Africa, for example,
call CQ for north EU and not reply to him if we have made a
contact at least ten times before!
From now until at least year 2002 the contacts between south
EU and AF will be on a daily basis.
Another suggestion: if an opening with AF is detected, it is
ok if we leave 50.110 free.
Why? Because for an African dx station calling, there are at
least 1.000 EU stations listening.
They do not need EU chatting on 50.110 to detect if there
are good propagation conditions. They can listen to beacons,
TV carriers and so on coming from EU.
Keeping 50.110 busy with local qsos may not let lucky EU
operators (that we do not hear) to have a qso with the AF dx
station, and causing also qrm to the last one.
There was some time ago a TV advertisement regarding a brand
new beer stating " think about it people, think about
it.......!"
IK0FTA, Sergio
3C5I Write:
How do we reach the people who repeatedly QRM??
On the opening on Feb 22, one IK8 station repeatedly QRM'd
QSOs trying to breakin - it was 6 times so I then went
QRT!!
To those few people who QRM, please wait until a QSO is
over!! You will get your contact much quicker.
Maybe other stations can help bring these rebels into
line??!! Can we all talk to them about the problem?
How do other DX stations handle it? Do they go QRT also??!!
I don't like to go QRT, but what's the point when I can't
hear?
Let's handle this problem before propagation really takes
off.

POSTA... TRA 3C5I e I0JX
3C5I scrive a I0JX
Tony
Quanto a lungo? Era circa 40 minuti o sbaglio? Ero troppo
cosi' prossimo all'equatore.
Io sono a 3 gradi e 45 secondi sopra l'equatore. Era forse E
sporadico??
sporadico.
Comunque ora so che la mia stazione lavora!!
Evviva!
Alan - 3C5I
I0JX risponde a 35CI
Ciao Alan,
in 3C e ho contattato diversi altri operatori. Io ho 50 anni
so realmente come.
multi hop (record europeo).
Italia; licenza ordinaria (prefissi: I, IK, IZ) e solo VHF
(prefisso IW).
hi).
Spero di incontrarti presto. Congratulazione per la tua
attvita'.

3C5I scrive nuovamente a I0JX
Ciao Antonio,
prossimi 12 mesi , andro' a vivere piu' vicino all'ufficio e
migliorare i miei contatti.
Saluti!
Spero di sentirti di nuovo sui 6m.

Thanks for the qso and particularly the help you gave us
all to channel and direct the contacts!
I was calling CQ also!! I have an automatic keyer with
memory to call CQ with a pause every 26 seconds. In the
pause, I heard your call - I thought you must have been an
image coming through on my IF!!! My quad was at 45 degrees
initially so it made a big difference pointing it at
you.
The propagation was very local, yes. It was also open for a
long time.
How long? Was it 40 minutes or so? I was too excited to
look.
The books say that TE is very unlikely for me so close to
the equator -
I am 3 deg 45' above the equator. Was it sporadic E?? The
distance is about 4200km which would be 2 hops for sporadic
E.
Now I know that my station works!!
Cheers

I0JX reply to 3C5I
Hi Alan,
evidently I got your e-mail address OK.
When you were calling CQ, your beam was offpointed; that
probably is the reason why I could not hear your signal.
Propagation lasted about one hour after we met, but I have
no evidence when the opening started as there was no other
signal on the band at all.
From your locator I determined that you are located in the
north-east part of the island. I would be very curious to
see the island which I do not know much of. I worked that
country in the sixties, when the prefix was still EA0, then
it changed in 3C and have worked several other stations
since then... I am 50 and began ham radio in 1965.
Experience shows that transequatorial from Europe is usually
limited to the area comprising Namibia, Botswana, Malawi,
Zimbabwe and South Africa (normally Transvaal only, ZS6) and
is characterized by very strong signals.
I believe that the openings we had in past with much more
northern countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Gabon, Guinea,
Tanzania, Congo etc. occurred via F2 propagation, but who
really knows... I would anyway exclude that our QSO was on
multiple-hop sporadic-E, as we have such conditions during
late June and July only. Once I worked a W5 beyond 9,000 Km
via multi-hop sporadic (European record).
I was reported from Italian stations living in the northern
part of the country that they had no signal from you; I
believe that, apart from the I0s (Rome), you only have
worked into IT9 (Sicily island, 600 Km south of Rome) and an
IK5 (Tuscany, about 200 Km to the north). For your
information we only have two licence classes in Italy, i.e.
full licence (I, IK, IZ prefixes) and VHF only (IW prefix).
We have the permit to operate on the whole 50 - 51 MHz band,
but we must request a specific authorization each year!!! No
beacons are allowed. By the way have you thought of
installing a beacon there?
Our QSO is already reported by the major 50-MHz DX
bulletins, so people is aware of your activity. Then keep
calling on 50.110, as propagation should improve with the
coming spring. We expect a propagation peak around 2001, but
this year there should are already signs of improvement.
There are plenty of stations active from all Europe, the
majority being in U.K., Holland and Italy.
I understnd you have a KB2 call in the US, I also have an
extra class US licence with call K0JX (vanity call, hi).
So hope to meet you soon again. Congrats for your
activity.

Hi Antonio
You would have loved this country 30 years ago when it
was in good condition under Spanish colonial rule. But it
has run down and is only just now starting to pickup with
oil money coming in.
I did not realise it was EA0 before.
I am 55 now and this may be my last work assignment before I
retire. I would like to stay here until the peak of the
sunspot cycle in 2 or 3 years time.
I have had too many callsigns. I started in 1965 also as
VK5ZEI (restricted to 50Mhz and above) then VK5IR
(unlimited), then 8P6EN in Barbados for 2 years in '71-'73,
then 9V1TU in Singapore for 6 mths, then inactive for 6
years while I was in Saudi Arabia. But I nearly got arrested
for suspicious behaviour by putting up a large collinear for
TV!!
I had so much fun as 8P6EN on 6m with a lot of contacts into
the US during summer. This should also be fun here. I will
run my auto CQ in the afternoons headed either East (for the
Grey line propagation) or North for a repeat of
Saturday.
Thanks for the info on the call areas - I had no idea where
the 5s and 9s were.
I would like to have a beacon and have the ability to do it
in my shack and could do it with 10 watts into my normal
antenna. I'm not sure that the authorities would like it
going all the time unattended. In 12 months time, we will
live right next to the office and I could do that more
easily. I will give it a try from home as it will certainly
help improve my contacts.
Cheers
See you again on 6m

Un Sabato
d'Inverno
(il Contest Romagna di
un IK0 in IV3)
a fare CQ CONTEST.
Mi metto allora subito in chiamata e vengo sommerso dalle
contest. Mi sono divertito molto e sono riuscito finalmente
a fare i miei primi 105 qso in un contest tutti in tropo;
alcun burst in MS.
105 QSO, 11 squares, 12 stazioni romane, dx IK7XGF JN71QM
554 Km.

A Saturday in the
winter
(the Contest Romagna of an IK0 in IV3)
With these few lines I want to tell you my first
experience in 6 meters in a contest, from the province of
Pordenone (Nord-East Italy).
The morning of January 3, in company of my son Alexander ,
cheer from the clement temperature, I decide to climb in
mountain for see what it could be worked.
After an hour I arrived in quota and mounted the not
flatulent but always excellent, for the /P operations, 5
Tonnà, I was ready to do CQ CONTEST.
The select posting is in Piancavallo to the quota of 1200
meters, open horizon toward East and South but closed from
the Alps toward I1 and I2 and all the North Europe.
As soon as I turn on my IC-706 does a turn of VFO and the
first station that I've listenen is IK0FTA Sergio, by now an
institution of the band hi...., 463 km of QRB.
After this I put in call and I come submerged from responses
from the zone 3 and 4, it will go on as for all the
contest.
I have enjoyed much and I am satisfactory finally to effect
beyond 100 qso in a contest (for the exactness 105) and,
moreover, all in tropo; yes all in tropo because, due to the
mountains, toward the North was completely covered and it
didn't arrive any burst in MS. I listen to the friends of
the zone 4 and 3 work PA stations, G and OZ but for me
anything, with big regret.
When I returned in Rome have had the pleasure of hear a
my
registration
made from Sergio IK0FTA that I have passed reports of
55 realities for almost all the duration of the contest.
Only aching note the business of have been listened to from
IT9RZR from Siracusa (JM76) but be not satisfactory to
finish the QSO cause a strong noise due, also, to the QRN
from the stations of the lowland.
In each case the contest is concluded with a score above the
best forecasts:
105 QSO, 11 squares, 12 Roman stations, dx IK7XGF JN71QM 554
Km.
I hope to have given a province to they looked for it and,
to who any pits still unprovided, also the square JN66.
I wanted to accentuate the great difference that I have
found in work in contest from the North Italy; I have
connected many stations from zone 4, around 35, with a
middle QRB of 200 km. These is executable qso with each
condition of propagation, that does understand why in the
winters contest is favorite of much the stations of the
lowland.
From Rome do 35 qso is already a labour..... at least the
more of the times! Also if you do only 50 qso, often, 15
have QRB around 30 km or less. With this I understand
beseech the friends of the zones 7, 8 and 9 of be more
active.
With this intention I pick the occasion for do a praise to
OM like IT9RZR, Maurizio of Siracusa, and IK7XGF, Alfredo of
Foggia, and to those om, like them, that despite the past
hours to listen to the buzz of the band, they don't abandon
the capability of effect QSO tropo, certainly more
interesting and difficult of those practicable in
E-sporadico, in each period of the year.
With these lines I pick the occasion also for suggest to the
contest manager hourly happier for the periods of carrying
out of the competitions; I explain better: get off all at 6
of the evening, in the dark, with a dense fog, and at 0
degrees, it doesn't do certainly fun. I would suggest, then,
of advance the Romagna contest of one hour from the 8 to the
16 UTC , for example.
