DXPEDITION TO SAN FELIX (CHILE) -12-30 March 2002

Ricevo questo msg da Dick, K5AND & Max I8NHJ

21 Dicembre 2001
Per realizzazione immediata

DXPEDITION TO SAN FELIX (CHILE)

12-30 Marzo 2002

For immediate release

DXPEDITION TO SAN FELIX (CHILE)

12-30 March 2002

A radio amateur expedition to San Felix Island (Chile) will be conducted in March 2002, using the callsign XROX.

Lying 900 km northwest of Valparaíso, San Felix is a barren rocky island about 3 km across, with two small islets nearby. Access to the site is restricted, due to the presence of a military garrison there. Little is known of the natural history of the island or of its possible prehistoric importance.

The major goal of this expedition is provide radio contact with this remote and seldom-activated island. Secondary goals include documenting indigenous species and searching for evidence of ancient occupation.

The expedition is being organized and led by Carlos G-Nascimento NP4IW/CE3AQI, who was a principal organizer of the 1995 Easter Island/Salas y Gomez (XROX/Y) and the 1997 Heard Island (VKOIR) expeditions. The project is being carried out in conjunction with Cordell Expeditions (Robert Schmieder, KK6EK), a nonprofit organization that has carried out expeditions to remote sites for more than 20 years. All permits, including landing, radio operation, and specimen collections have been obtained.

The 13-member team includes the following radio amateurs: NP4IW, K5AB, I8NHJ, N7CQQ, DJ9ZB, CE0YWS, N6MZ, KO4RR, KK6EK, W6KK, HB9AHL, K5AND, N6TQS. The team and a 20-ft. container of gear will travel from Valparaíso (Chile) to San Felix aboard the Chilean Navy vessel Chacabuco, and be airlifted on the island by Chilean Navy helicopter. The vessel will then proceed on to Easter Island, leaving the team on San Felix. Returning 2 weeks later, the vessel will retrieve the crew and gear, and then return to Valparaíso.

The expedition is being financed by the participants, supplemented by donations from DX associations, radio clubs, and individuals. Contributions made to the expedition through Cordell Expeditions are eligible for deduction as a donation to a 501( c )( 3 ) organization.

I will arrive on Abaco FL16ip in the Bahamas on January 1 and stay until January 10 ,2002.
The main focus of this trip will be to work as many F2 contacts possible on 6 meters.
I also will put a lot of effort in making WSJT contacts on 2 meters.
All of the 2 meter activity will be in the evenings.
Day time will be for 6 meter F2. Look for me on 2 meter on 144.140 for WSJT contacts on randoms.
I will take the first 30 seconds of each minute.
I will also be open for a limited number of Skeds on 2. WSJT only.
All skeds will be on 144.116. Email me the time that works best for you in the evening and I will do my best to work it out. Sorry only WSJT contacts. Other modes take to long and my time will be limited. So if you have not got on WSJT yet now is the time to do it. I have include a few links where you can get information about it. I will also spend time on CW and some SSb on 10 through 40 meters if six meters does not open.
Look for me on 28.885 for info while I am in the Bahamas. I will not have the Internet while there.
I hope to give many of you a new country on 6 and 2 meters.
